I found that after some time I was able to get used to the single hand control. It was a bit strange at the start.
I think one thing that is interesting in the game is when you start chaining pokemon and get the candies. You can get some very overpowered pokemon when using them. I have pretty much used a single shiny oddish (now vileplume) to beat every battle.
