You could always try panzoid for easy thumbnail creation. It's a lot simpler than GIMP but it doesn't have as much features. You should try both and see which one suits you 
Another good thing to use for thumbnails is 'Canva' I know of a lot of people on the forums that use it. As for the best way to grow a small channel well thats really dependant on the amount of work you want to do and the amount of time you want to put into it - It is very unlikely that you will get instant fame, or your channel explode overnight - don't get me wrong some people have had this happen but YouTube takes time and effort and most people give up as soon as the views / subs stop growing.
At the very least, for a small channel / any channel for that matter you should be ;
- Making sure you are producing videos to a high quality first and foremost
- Once your have content you wish to upload spend time editing it and making it look nice, some people even say rewatch your footage to see if you enjoy it, as chances are if you do other people might
- Make sure to take time to fill out a quick description of the video and utilise tags, for example you could use TubeBuddy or RapidTags to help if you get stuck with this
- Make eye catching thumbnails to draw viewers in
- Upload to a schedule if possible so viewers / returning subs know when to expect a video from you
- Colab if possible with other users , it goes without saying the more people hear of you the greater the exposure

First work on the quality of your content, these video need to stack up against other larger YouTubers. Once you have that down you can get your channel recognized by using social media, forums etc.
1. Make LOTS of content. At least upload twice a week. Also Like your own videos. [selfish, but helps.]
2. Thumbnail : Get a cool shot of something in your video. Add bold and striking text with your video Title to it. Surely viewers will think that this channel is professional, and view the video.
