Everyone is absolute right when it comes to trying to grow your Channel on YouTube, and it's important for new YTers to understand all of this when starting out. Had a few channels since 2009, but launched my gaming channel March 2014; currently have over 1,040 subscribers, but it's been a long and slow growth process seeing each new sub as a small victory and every unsub as a loss that really does hurt a smaller Channel.
Passion for the content we make, dedication to continuing to learn as well as improve our skills, patience while always trying to think about the big picture, the ability to endure not growing as fast, getting as many views as you were hoping for, and sometimes losing subscribers for reasons that may never be explained, and finally continuing to hope that if you don't stop trying your best eventually you'll see the fruits of your labor.
Might take a few years, and others might end up growing faster than you while countless Channels fall by the wayside; if you're meant to be a big YouTuber one day it'll eventually happen, and if not you still learned a lot on the road closer to hopefully one of these days figuring out what you're meant to do.
